Dovetail Size

This sight is becoming one of our most popular selling sights due to the fact it can be mounted on almost any rifle with a dovetail cut in the barrel.
The Barrel Mounted Dovetail sight looks great on modern and antique rifles alike.   For example: This sight is "amazing" on the Ruger 10/22.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR AN APERTURE THAT "LOOKS RIGHT" ON ALMOST ANY RIFLE AND MOUNTS WITHOUT DRILLING AND TAPPING OR OTHER ALTERATIONS?  THIS SIGHT LOOKS AND WORKS GREAT ON WINCHESTER 94, 92, 86 AND ALMOST ANY OTHER WINCHESTER WITH A BARREL DOVETAILED FOR A REAR SIGHT.

The barrel mount is .400" from bottom of dovetail to center of Aperture at the lowest setting.  Aperture center is approx. .300" above the top of the barrel.
IF  this  measurement  is close to the height of your current  "notch"  sight,  then  the  barrel  mount  will  most likely work with your factory front sight.

THIS SIGHT SHIPS WITH A .125" (Large) APERTURE INSTALLED

The dovetail mounted sight is designed to replace the factory barrel mounted sight on any rifle with a .375 (most rifles) or .390 (Rossi) inch dovetail.  It works with most factory front sights and provides both windage and elevation adjustments. Savage_99The removeable .125" aperture  can be removed and the sight then becomes a .200” ghost ring.  Other sizes are available on our Apertures page. (see the side bar)  The sight is 1 7/8” long and is secured in the dovetail with a set screw.   This sight can be ordered in Blued Steel, Stainless Steel or Brass.

The rifle in this photo is my Son's 308 Winchester Savage 99.  He shoots 1 1/2" groups with this set up using the factory front sight.  (we cannot promise the factory front sight will work.  Please see our FAQ page for details.

Barrel Dovetail sight installation instructions

  1. The dovetail may be a few thousandths larger than the slot it should fit. If you cannot start the sight by pushing it into the slot it may be necessary to use a small TRIANGULAR FILE to remove a small amount of metal before the sight will fit.

  2. Gently radius the corner of the the dovetail to match the radius on the corner of the dovetail slot as a first step. When you file, only file on one of the sloped surfaces. Do not remove metal from the bottom of the dovetail.

  3. Use a BRASS PUNCH or hardwood dowel drive the sight to the center of the barrel.

  4. Tighten the set screw which will secure the sight on the barrel.

Adjusting the sight

  1. The peep is adjusted for elevation by turning it on its threaded shaft. It is secured by a set screw on the left side of the sight.

  2. The aperture can be removed and turned in from either side of the peep.

  3. Windage is adjusted by moving the sight in its dovetail slot.

  4. If you have any problems installing or adjusting the sight please CONTACT me.
